The very first World Day of the Poor, called for by Pope Francis, is on 33rd Sunday of the year, 19th November. Caritas Social Action Network has a range of resources available to help schools and parishes get involved.
The materials include downloadable prayer cards, films and testimonies of those living in poverty, and notes for Children’s Liturgy.
The day aims to go beyond raising awareness of the poverty in our midst to encourage everyone to reach out to people who are living in poverty. In his message about the event, Pope Francis said, “We may think of the poor simply as the beneficiaries of our occasional volunteer work, or of impromptu acts of generosity that appease our conscience. However good and useful such acts may be for making us sensitive to people’s needs and the injustices that are often their cause, they ought to lead to a true encounter with the poor and a sharing that becomes a way of life. ”
